Episode 6 - Phil’s Giant Meatlocker (A fugly game against the Seahawks)

October 4th, 2006

Greetings fellow meatheads!

Yes it took me a while to get this video posted. Part of that was due to me being extraordinarily busy and part was that it was so painful to talk about the horrendous ass whoooping we took against the Seahawks.

In this podcast I talk about that painful game, the poor coaching, and what the Gmen need to do this week to get back on track.

I’m in Boston this week speaking at a conference so I had to record it from there. You will notice a lower video quality (using my webcam instead of my Sony Video Camera) and at the end the sound and video get a little out of synch (I think the low lighting bogged things down a bit). But what do you want for nothing . . . Rubber Biscuit?

Don’t be discouraged Giant faithful - the wheels haven’t fallen off this bus yet . . . I have faith the Gmen will right this ship, and they will start by defeating the Redskins this week who are high coming off of their overtime victory over the Jaguars. Look for a BIG game from LaVar Arrington against his former team . . . it’s payback time!

FIRE IT UP!

Oh the pain - what an ugly game!

September 30th, 2006

While I was most certainly busy as all hell this week . . . that is only partially the reason for this delayed blog post.  The biggest reason for the delay is me trying to quell the sick feeling in my stomach from watching such a pathetic game by the Giants against the Seahawks last Sunday.  The score of that game certainly did not tell the tale (as anyway who watched the game can attest to).

The gmen were flat, pathetic, uninspired and just plain ugly.  The defense looked confused and gave up 5 passing TDs that were all but uncontested - Seahawk receivers were just running around WIDE OPEN.  The offense was inept and not only committed hordes of penalties but receivers could not hold onto the ball.  Eli was back to his mistake prone ways trying to do too much and force the ball in.

The Giants managed to squander away any momentum that had gained from there heroics the week before in the overtime victory over the Eagles.

While I agree that Shockey often runs his mouth too much . . . he couldn’t be more right.  While execusion was certainly an issue . . . this loss seemed to point directly to some MAJOR coaching issues.  The play calling and game plan was bland at best and most predictable.  It was like watching a pop warner team try to take on a professional football team.  For all of Coughlins talk about Discipline I didn’t see a whole lot anywhere on the field.

As my brother pointed out quite vocally during the game - there is a BIG difference between Discipline and Rigidity.  It seems that Coughlin is nothing but rigid.  He comes into a game with a game plan and then when it doesn’t work, does he make adjustments?  No he just keeps trying to force things.  Not the way to lead a team to victory!

Read this interesting article: “Coughlin’s Tight ship looks like it’s in danger of sinking”.

I’ll try to muster up the stomach for a video podcast tomorrow being that thanks to the football gods the Giants have a bye week so hopefully they have an extra week to right this ship before they piss the season down the drain.

Episode 5 - Phil’s Giant Meatlocker (A late game victory of the Eagles)

September 23rd, 2006

Greetings fellow meatheads!

WOW! That was a helluva game. Check out today’s episode of Phil’s Giant Meatlocker for my thoughts about this late game important victory over the Eagles, why Akers deserved his beat down, my brothers criticism of the play calling, the importance of chemistry, and my Mom’s words of meathead Giant Wisdom (now you’ll know where it comes from - the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!).

Sure, like you, I was frustrated by the Giants inability to play well in the first half. By the 3rd quarter I must admit I was ready to give up . . . but Kim (my wonderful meathead wife) emplored me to have hope . . . How right she was! The Giants pulled together at the end of the game and played like . . . well Giants! This might be just what they needed to get them ready to go into Seattle and come out with a victory. GO BLUE!

Enjoy this episode and FIRE IT UP!

BTW - The awesome music you hear each week playing during the opening and closing of this podcast is a song called King Saul by Honey Child, my brothers band from when he lived in AZ and NC. They are awesome and you should check out their site. They still have copies of their last CD “Taller” for sale and I can’t recommend it highly enough (and no, not just becuase he is my brother . . . THEY ROCK!)

Giants pound Eagle kicker Ackers for cheap shot

September 20th, 2006

At the start of the Giant/Eagles game last Sunday you knew it was going to be a smash mouth NFC Beast came when on the first play - puny Eagle kicker David Ackers takes a cheap shot at one of the Giants coaching staff (former Giant Fullback Charles Way who is now the “Director of Player Programs”).

Luke Petitgout and Brandon Jacobs taught him a little NY lesson on the side lines  . . . . fauhgetaboutit!!

Those are 2 guys I’d wanna have watching my back!

She blinded me with science . . .

September 20th, 2006

Yes . . . because a winning season and a successful team in the NFL is all about chemistry.  Look at any successful team . . . whether it be in business or sports, and I’ll show you chemistry.  That intangible, impossible to coach, essential element of teamwork when you bring a bunch of people together and circle them around a common goal . . .

In his article: Giants: Bruised, battered and feeling good Mike Garafolo talks about how our late game overtime victory against the Eagles is the kind of thing that can really bring a team together, and I agree and so does Strahan who said . . .

“The way this victory came about, it almost feels better than if we had just gone there and blown them out,” he said. “And to be honest with you, this team at this point needed something to bring us together and maybe this is what we needed.”

That might be just what the Giant need to help them keep up the intensity on the road against the Seahawks.

It’s all about the chemistry baby . . .

A hard fought victory against the Eagles - The Gmen Fire it up at the end!

September 20th, 2006

Damn . . . what a game! Why do they always do this and make use wait until the end clutching the couch white knuckled waiting to see if they can pull it out - AAAGGGHHHHH! Despite some first half sluggishness, the Giants came together in a game they needed to win. Odd to say that so early in the season but after losing an emotional home game against the Colts in the Manning Bowl on a national stage in week 1 - and starting down the barrel of 2 road games - A division game against the Eagles and then the Seahawks in Seattle . . . the Gmen needed a win.

And what a win it was! From a 24-7 Deficit they fought back and snatched back the game from the talons of those damn Eagles to win 30-24. WOW! Read some of the details.

Episode 4 - Phil’s Giant Meatlocker (The official season opener)

September 13th, 2006

Greetings fellow meatheads!

It’s such a wonderful feeling having the season underway and while I am disappointed about the loss to the Colts I’m looking forward to a good matchup against the Eagles. Check out today’s episode of Phil’s Giant Meatlocker for my thoughts and updates on the first game (plus my theory and observations about the Giants “Sibling Rivalry”).

BTW - I shot this weeks show in front of a green screen so I could chroma key some different backgrounds behind me (we goin’ hollywood baby!). Post a comment and let me know what you think! It’s not every day I get to talk in front of a Giant Pile of Meat.

Enjoy this episode and FIRE IT UP!

The Manning Bowl (Round 1) - Giants Fall to Colts 26 - 21

September 12th, 2006

Well it was a helluva game and the hard fought battle everyone was hoping for. I think the Manning Bowl lived up to it’s hype. There were way too many penalties and mistakes - not unusual for the first game of the season while things are still gelling and the speed gets kicked up a notch . . . but I think think the Gmen fought hard.

Here is a Good Overview of the Game. Also some great photos (First Half, Second Half) all compliments of the Star Ledger. Boy I miss my daily Star Ledger Sports paper reads during football season . . . sure I get it on the web - but there is just something missing from having it in your paper every morning.

As disappointing as this loss is we need to put it behind us and get ready for 2 tough road games - first this week by facing the Eagles in Philly (the only team in the NFC East with a victory after week one) and the following week against the Seahawks . . . (so much for easy schedules).

I hope you all enjoyed the first NFC East Roundtable Discussion - if you haven’t listened yet - what are you waiting for!

BTW - I know what you’re asking yourself . . . Phil . . . why did you put Manning Bowl (ROUND 1) as the title? I’ll tell you why . . . because I have a dream . . . that after this hard fought first game of the season Eli wants a chance to beat his older brother. The Giants and Colts fire it up through the season and the brothers meet again on the biggest stage of them all . . . The Big Dance . . . The SuperBowl! (I’m mad you say? Perhaps . . . but you know the NFL shares my dream because what better story could you ask for - it’s Superbowl hype nirvana. )

And I firmly believe that thoughts have power (otherwise I wouldn’t be screaming and yelling so much during the game) :-) so I will join in this collective NFL wish and try to manifest ROUND 2 of the Manning Bowl to be decided in Miami!

Can I get a witness my Big Blue brothers and sisters ??!!??

Swimming with Dolphins and FIRED UP!

September 8th, 2006

Howdy all - just wanted to wish you all a HAPPY NFL 2006 KICKOFF! I am headed out the door on my way to Discovery Cover to swim with Dolphins (real ones not the team that lost last night). A life long dream of mine being made possible thanks to my wonderful wife Kim (who is taking me there as a birthday present).

I’ll be back just in time to watch the Gmen FIRE IT UP against the colts in the Brother Bowl. Enjoy your first Sunday of Football - check back next week for a post Manning Bowl Video update!

GO BLUE!!

Giants opener already seems pivotal - the mindset of winning

September 7th, 2006

Check out this article about why the Giants first game (the Brothers Bowl of Manning vs. Manning) is a critical game to start off the season.

It appears I’m not the only one who things winning early (including the preseason) is important:

“When you lose, it’s a habit. And so is winning,” said linebacker Brandon Short, who is beginning his second stint with the Giants after two years with the Panthers. “It’s difficult to turn that tide. It’s a mentality.”

Glad to have you back Brandon! Keep that winning mentality and FIRE IT UP!
